On Thursday, December 9, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health received lab confirmation of the region’s first case of the COVID-19 Omicron variant of concern. The positive case is a Guelph male 10-20 years of age. The individual was fully vaccinated (two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least two weeks prior to infection) and is experiencing mild symptoms.
“This is a reminder that we must remain vigilant,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health. “I know it has been a long pandemic, but we must continue to act in ways that protect ourselves, those we love and our communities from this virus.”
WDG Public Health is currently completing the investigation of this case and several potential related cases. Public Health is contacting any high-risk exposures to the positive case. Members of the public do not need to take additional steps at this time unless directed by Public Health.
“This is a time to act with caution,” said Dr. Mercer. “We know that the combined protection of the public health measures available to us – masking, physical distancing, limiting gathering sizes and getting first, second and booster doses of a COVID-19 vaccine – will continue to protect us against the virus.”
