Media Release: WDG Public Health and Wellington County encourage residents to test their homes for radon

October 21, 2025

This year, WDG Public Health is partnering with Take Action on Radon, a national initiative funded by Health Canada, and the Wellington County Library for the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge, which provides free radon test kits to the first 100 residents of Wellington County who register at wdgpublichealth.ca/100KitChallenge.

Radon is a colourless, odourless gas present in many homes. It is a naturally occurring radioactive gas found in soil, rock and groundwater. Testing is the only way to measure the presence of radon in your home.

“As the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, radon can pose a serious risk to you and your family, but there are steps you can take to ensure your home is safe,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health. “By using a radon test kit, people can better understand their risks and take proper action to protect their households.”

“The Wellington County Library is pleased to partner with WDG Public Health,” said Rebecca Hine, Chief Librarian, Wellington County. “By providing free test kits to residents, we’re empowering our community to take simple steps that can make their homes safer and healthier.”

While the free kits are available only to Wellington County residents as part of this local challenge, WDG Public Health encourages all residents across Wellington, Dufferin and Guelph to learn about radon and consider testing their homes. Radon test kits can be purchased online through multiple Canadian vendors.
