Diseases of Public Health Significance (Reportable to Public Health)

Licensed child care centres are legally required under the Health Protection and Promotion Act to report any child with a known or suspected disease of public health significance to Public Health.

Public Health investigates and manages persons with diseases of public health significance under the authority of the Health Protection and Promotion Act R.S.O. 1990, c.H.7. We:

  • Provide information on childhood diseases and diseases of public health significance
  • Provide guidelines on how long an ill child should be kept home
  • Recommend infection control measures to prevent further spread of the disease in the child care centre
  • Provide advisories about diseases of public health significance to parents and staff

To report a child with a disease of public health significance call the Reportable Disease Intake Line at 1-800-265-7293 ext. 4752 with the following information:

  • First and last name of child
  • Child’s date of birth
  • Child’s gender
  • Child’s home phone number and address
  • Parent/guardian name
  • Date of onset of illness
  • Name of child care centre
  • Person reporting (first and last name)
