Media Release: Region’s Air Quality Index forecast is now at “High Risk”

June 28, 2023

The Air Quality Health Index for our region is forecasted to reach 10 (High Risk) over the next 24 hours because of smoke from wildfires. The smoke contains small particles which can enter our lungs and bloodstream and cause serious health complications. Small children, pregnant women, seniors, people with lung or heart conditions and people involved in strenuous outdoor work or sports are at the highest risk.

“The air quality forecast for our region is serious,” said Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, Associate Medical Officer of Health. “Our current air quality can cause very serious health complications – especially those who are at greatest risk. Please know the symptoms of smoke exposure, reduce your time outdoors wherever possible and check in on those around you who may be at greater risk.”

According to the Government of Canada, when the Air Quality Health Index reaches “High Risk”, at risk populations should, “Reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors. Children and the elderly should also take it easy.” Further, all members of the public should, “Consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors if you experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation.”

WDG Public Health is encouraging all residents to monitor for symptoms of smoke exposure and seek medical care when necessary. Stop or reduce your activity level if breathing is uncomfortable or you are feeling unwell. People respond differently to smoke, and it is important to be aware of how your body is feeling.

Air quality can change throughout the day. The Government of Canada’s website provides ongoing updates on its website. Many weather apps also provide ongoing updates throughout the day.

Residents are encouraged to spend time indoors while the risk is highest, and to keep windows and doors closed if the temperature is comfortable. When not at home, have a plan to access indoor spaces such as libraries, community centres, or malls. Please check with your municipality for a list of public spaces that are available to access.
