Media Release: Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph has first reported case of influenza since 2020

October 14, 2021

For the first time since April 2020, WDG Public Health has a lab confirmed influenza (flu) case. While this case is a result of travel, residents of the region should expect to see a resurgence of flu cases this fall as we reopen the region and gather in larger numbers.

“This isn’t unexpected,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer. “The pandemic caused a significant decline in reported flu cases, but the flu never left us. As we continue to fight the pandemic locally, we don’t want to overwhelm the health system with patients ill with the flu so it’s more important than ever to get your flu shot to reduce your risk of serious illness and protect the vulnerable people in your life.”

There are several convenient ways to get a flu shot:

  • WDG Public Health clinics (limited spots available beginning October 18)
  • Primary care providers
  • Participating local pharmacies
