Vaccine Information
We want your child’s school vaccination experience to be as positive as possible. To prepare, please review what to expect before vaccination, when it's time for vaccination and what to expect after vaccination day with your child.
Before your vaccination:
- Wear a short-sleeved shirt or something with easy access to your upper arm.
- Have a good meal or snack before you arrive.
- Bring something comforting like a favourite toy, book, device or even a fidget toy. You’ve got this!
- Drink water to stay hydrated — simple, but important!
- You can also use a numbing cream or gel from a pharmacy if you are worried about it hurting. Ask your parent or guardian about it.
When it’s time for your vaccination:
- You will be called to the vaccination area to take a seat.
- The nurse will review your consent with you.
- Tell the nurse about any CARD strategies you want to use, for example:
- Comfort: Hold your favourite toy
- Ask: Ask any questions you may have
- Relax: Take deep breaths or listen to music
- Distract: Use a device, read or talk to someone
- The nurse will give you the vaccine(s) in your upper arm. It might feel like a quick pinch.
- All done! You’ll get a vaccine record (yellow card) to take home.
After your vaccination:
For a day or two after your vaccination, you might have a sore arm and feel a bit tired. These are normal signs that your body is doing exactly what it should—building protection!
Common side effects:
- Swelling, tenderness or redness where the needle was given
- Minor muscle aches
- Mild fever
- Tiredness
- Headache
What to do:
- Put a clean, cold cloth over the sore area
- Continue to move your arm as much as possible
- Get a good night’s sleep
When to seek immediate care:
See your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital emergency department if any of these symptoms develop:
- Swollen mouth, face or throat
- Hives, rash or itchy skin
- Difficulty breathing, wheezing or chest tightness
- Seizures or convulsions
Visit Improving the vaccination experience for your child for helpful resources.
You may also consider using the CARD system to help them feel more calm, confident and less nervous.

More information
Please review the following FAQs if you have questions about Grade 7 vaccinations. If your question is not answered here, you can call 1-800-265-7293 ext. 7006.
Yes. Your child’s immune system can easily handle many vaccines at once. Receiving multiple vaccines is safe, convenient, and ensures the best protection for your child at the earliest age possible.
Please visit immunizewdg.ca to submit new records. To view current records, please use the Immunization Connect Ontario (ICON) tool. You can also contact our vaccine records department at 1-800-265-7293 ext. 7006. More information can be found at our School and Child Care Immunizations page.
Yes. Please complete the online consent form and indicate on the form the dates of the previous doses. A public health nurse will ensure the timing is correct prior to administering their next dose.

If they completed a full series of Hepatitis B vaccine or Twinrix, they do not need to repeat Hepatitis B at school. Fill out an online consent form with the dates of the vaccines and indicate ‘NO’ in the consent box for Hep B vaccine. If they have not received the full series, a nurse will reach out and advise if the vaccine is needed.
Yes, they do need a dose of MenC-ACYW-135. Men-C only covers one strain of meningitis that is most commonly seen in younger children (the C strain). Men-C-ACYW-135 covers for the C strain again but it also covers an additional three other strains A, Y and W-135, which your child has not been protected against yet.
As per the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) only one valid dose of MenC-ACYW-135 after age one is required for school attendance. However, your child is still eligible for a publicly funded dose of MenC-ACYW-135 in grade 7. Antibodies can wane so receiving another dose is optional. For more information on a second dose please call our Call Centre at 1-800-265-7293 ext. 7006.
Vaccines required for school attendance under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) will need a valid religious or conscientious exemption form completed. Visit Immunization Exemptions for Children in School and Child Care for more information.
Please submit the online consent form and indicate “NO” in the consent boxes and add a note to advise you are in the process of exemption.
