Our Approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to technologies that can perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as creating content, analyzing information, finding patterns and helping people make decisions.

WDG Public Health uses and evaluates AI tools to support our work and improve services for the communities we serve. AI can help us work more efficiently, explore new ideas and make information and services easier to access.

Our approach to AI focuses on protecting privacy, maintaining public trust, ensuring accountability and using technology responsibly.

How WDG Public Health uses AI

WDG Public Health may use AI tools to support activities such as:

  • Drafting and editing content
  • Summarizing information
  • Supporting day-to-day administrative tasks
  • Analyzing data and supporting research
  • Improving digital services and tools
  • Exploring ways to improve public health programs and services

AI helps staff with their work but does not replace their professional knowledge, judgment or decision-making.

Human oversight and accountability

Human oversight is an essential part of WDG Public Health's approach to AI. WDG Public Health staff are responsible for decisions, recommendations, information and content created with the help of AI.

WDG Public Health does not rely on AI alone to make decisions about public health programs, services, policies or operations. Staff review AI-generated information for accuracy before it is used.

Privacy and security

Protecting personal and personal health information is a fundamental responsibility for WDG Public Health.

When using AI tools, we follow privacy laws, organizational policies and information security requirements. We also have governance processes in place to help ensure AI tools are used safely and responsibly.

Transparency

WDG Public Health is committed to being open about how we use AI.

We share information about our approach to AI and the principles that guide its use. We also aim to be transparent when AI plays a significant role in creating public content, analyzing information, supporting services or informing decisions.

Equity and accessibility

AI can offer benefits, but it can also create challenges.

When considering and using AI tools, we look at how they may affect equity, accessibility and inclusion. Our goal is to use AI in ways that make services easier to access and help reduce barriers for the communities we serve.

Environmental sustainability

AI technologies use energy, water and computing equipment, which can affect the environment.

When evaluating AI tools, we consider their environmental impacts along with privacy, security, effectiveness and cost.

Ongoing review and improvement

AI technology is changing quickly. WDG Public Health regularly reviews how we use AI to make sure our approach continues to follow laws, recommended practices and organizational priorities.

We are committed to using AI responsibly, maintaining appropriate safeguards and finding ways technology can improve public health services.
