WDG Public Health offers a range of birth control services through our reproductive health clinics.

Low-Cost Birth Control

If you're under 24 and don’t have a drug plan, you may qualify for birth control at a lower cost. Call us to learn more and see if you’re eligible.

IUD Services

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a long-acting, reversible method of birth control. There are two types: hormonal and non-hormonal (copper).
We offer:

  • IUD consultations
  • Insertion
  • Renewal
  • Removal

Emergency Contraception

WDG Public Health offers pregnancy testing (urine only) and counselling, and emergency contraception, including Plan B, Ella and Copper IUD.

Plan B: Can be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. Available at a pharmacy without a prescription. If you are 24 or younger, have an Ontario health card, and do not have private insurance, OHIP+ may cover Plan B for free with a prescription from a doctor.

Ella: Can be taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex. Requires a prescription from a doctor.

Copper IUD: Must be inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex. Requires an appointment with a doctor.

Important: If it has been more than 5 days since unprotected sex, contact the SHORE Centre or visit Choice Connect.

Missed a Pill?

It happens! Take your “late” pill as soon as you remember it if it has been less than 24 hours. Here is what to do if it has been 24 hours or more.

Use condoms for the next 7 days.

Take the emergency contraceptive pill (Plan B) if you’ve had unprotected sex in the last five days or if you have unprotected sex in the next 7 days.

You are not protected from pregnancy until you take your birth control every day for 7 days.

Week 2 or 3

Take 2 pills as soon as possible.

Finish your package.

No extra protection or emergency contraception needed.
Week 4
(if using a 28-pill pack)

None.

Start your next package on time.

No extra protection needed. These pills are inactive.
If you start your next package late, use condoms for 7 days.

Missed more than one pill

  • Take two pills as soon as possible and continue taking your pills as usual.
  • Use condoms for the next seven days.
  • Take the emergency contraceptive pill (Plan B) if you’ve had unprotected sex in the last five days.
  • If you have unprotected sex in the seven days after you miss pills, take the emergency contraceptive pill (Plan B).
