Getting an annual flu shot and COVID vaccine offers the best protection from serious illness during respiratory illness season, which generally runs from October to April each year. Receiving these vaccines helps maximize protection against severe illness during the winter months when peak circulation of respiratory viruses is happening. You can safely get your flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time.
It is recommended that individuals who are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19 receive an additional dose of a COVID-19 vaccine this spring.
Spring COVID Vaccine
It is recommended that you receive an additional dose this spring if you are:
- aged 65 years and older
- a resident of a long-term care home or other congregate living setting for seniors
- aged 6 months and older and are moderately to severely immunocompromised (due to an underlying condition or treatment)
- aged 55 years and older and identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Metis or their non-Indigenous household member and are aged 55 years and older
This additional vaccine dose can provide added protection that may have decreased over time for those at increased risk.
Individuals outside of these groups may choose to receive an additional dose if it is recommended from a health care provider OR they are starting or completing a primary series.
If eligible, you can book an appointment for your spring COVID vaccine in one of the following ways:
- Book with your local pharmacy (for ages 2 and up)
- Contact your family doctor or health care provider.
- Book an appointment with Public Health for ages 6 months - 4 years.

Fall 2024 Flu and COVID Vaccines
Individuals who do not fall in the above categories are not currently recommended to receive a COVID-19 vaccine dose in Spring 2024 and should wait until Fall 2024. More information about fall flu and COVID vaccine clinics will be available in October.
