POLICY STATEMENT

The continued success of immunization programs requires a comprehensive, effective and efficient vaccine system.  The potency of vaccine is dependent on proper cold chain technique and following best practices for the storage and handling of vaccines. 

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) will ensure all publicly funded vaccine and travel vaccine will be stored, handled, distributed and administered by WDGPH in accordance to current best practices of the cold chain technique.

WDGPH will ensure health care providers adhere to proper vaccine management, including storage and handling of all publicly funded vaccine.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all nurses and administrative support assigned to Clinical Services, School Health and Control of Infectious Disease teams and student nurses working in these programs.

DEFINITIONS

Cold Chain:  A system of all equipment and procedures used to maintain the prescribed temperature range 20 C to 80 during the transport, storage and handling of vaccine, starting at the manufacturer and ending with the administration of the vaccine to the client.  In addition some vaccines require protection from light.

PROCEDURE

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) will ensure all publicly funded vaccine and travel vaccine will be stored, handled, distributed and administered by WDGPH in accordance to the current:

  1. Vaccine Storage and Handling Guidance Document
  2. Vaccine Storage and Handling Protocol (under the Ontario Public Health Standards)
