POLICY STATEMENT

Nurses working the for Community Health Programs may use the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) name and billing number in the following circumstances and where a medical directive exists:

  • Diagnostic testing: x-ray, ultrasound, blood, etc.; and
  • Referral to a specialist.

Nurse Practitioners working for Community Health Programs may use the MOH name and billing number in the following circumstances and where a medical directive exists:

  • Prescribing medications not authorized under the RN(EC) drug and laboratory lists; and
  • Referral to a specialist.

Should the use of the MOH name and billing number be required outside of the above circumstances, approval for the use must be provided by the MOH.

SCOPE

This policy applies to nurses, nurse practitioners and clinical support assigned to Clinical Services, School Health and Control of Infectious Disease teams and student nurses working in these programs.

DEFINITIONS

Medical Directive – a written physician order for one or a series of medical procedures, treatments and/or interventions that may be performed by a Registered Nurse for a range of clients/patients who meet specific criteria.
