POLICY STATEMENT

The use of ladders is associated with hazards.  Only employees who have completed Ladder Training will be allowed to use ladders. 

Staff authorized and trained will use only ladders that have been approved for use by the Manager, Operations.  The Manager, Operations is responsible for maintaining a list of all ladders approved for use by employees.

PROCEDURE

  1. Use the proper ladder for the task.
  2. Visually inspect the ladder prior to use and complete the inspection form (CSSHAS(F)495).
  3. Remove the ladder if defective.
  4. Never use a ladder in an unsafe way. Always use a ladder according to safe practices and proper training.
  5. Store ladder properly when not in use.

Note:  This policy does not apply to step stools as defined below.

DEFINITIONS

Step stool (ladder type):  a self-supporting, foldable, portable ladder, nonadjustable in length, 32 inches or less in overall size, with flat steps and without a pail shelf, designed to be climbed on the ladder top cap as well as all steps.  The side rails may continue above the top cap.
