POLICY STATEMENT

It is the policy of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health that every owner or person having the care and custody of a cat or dog three months of age or over shall ensure that the cat or dog is immunized against rabies according to Ontario Regulation 567/90 – Rabies Immunization.

PROCEDURE

  1. During an investigation of an animal to human exposure, the person responsible for the animal shall provide the Public Health Inspector (PHI) with proof of vaccination. This can be done by presenting a copy of the vaccination certificate or by contacting the vet by phone.
  2. If the person responsible for the animal is unable to give proof of vaccination, a Notice of Mandatory Rabies Vaccination of Cats and Dogs (HPDRAB(F)4) will be issued.  The person responsible for the animal shall supply the PHI with proof of vaccination within 2 weeks after the quarantine release date.
  3. Proof of vaccination can be done in one of the following ways:
  • Have the veterinarian sign the notice confirming the dog/cat is vaccinated and send or deliver said Notice to Public Health;
  • Send or deliver a copy of the Rabies Vaccination Certificate to Public Health; or
  • The PHI can verify the vaccination status be speaking with the animal’s veterinarian.

Failure to comply with this notice will result in the issuing of a Provincial Offence Notice by the Public Health Inspector under Part 1 of the Provincial Offences Act (Ont.).
