Procedure

Category: Safe Water
Subject: Chemical Complaints from Owners/Tenants of Private Supply
Division: N/A
Procedure Number: CA.83.02.104
Effective Date: Mar. 1996

PROCEDURE

  1. Interpret and explain the results to the caller.  If the caller is a tenant, obtain owner information and advise both parties whether the problem is aesthetic or health related in nature.  Refer to the Ontario Drinking Water Quality Standards as necessary.
  2. If the problem is health related:
  • Notify the owner of the results and explain their responsibility to provide a potable source of water to any tenants.  If necessary, discuss temporary alternative water supplies while problem is being resolved.  Deliver/mail/fax a Drinking Water Advisory letter (HPD SW (L)4); and
  • If owner does not comply with verbal request, send an order to the owner instructing them to provide a potable water supply for their tenants.
  1. Record complaint details on a Complaint Service Request in Hedgehog.
  2. If the problem is resolved by using a treatment device, obtain two consecutive samples for analysis (see CA.83.01.110 Chemical Water Testing Private Wells for testing protocol).  If the results are satisfactory, rescind the order using Removal of Drinking Water Advisory letter (HPD SW (L)5).  If the results are unsatisfactory inform the owner that the order is still in place and to pursue corrective action until two consecutive satisfactory results are obtained.  When this is done, rescind the order and notify Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Ministry of Environment.
  3. If the order is not complied with, discuss legal options with Director/Supervisor.
