PROCEDURE

  1. When notification is received from the after-hours answering service that a laboratory, physician or hospital is calling to report an animal biting incident, the Manager on call will notify the Public Health Inspector (PHI) on call.  The Manager will give the caller’s contact information to the PHI to call and take the report.  During the period from 2300 hours to 0830 hours there is no PHI on call. The Manager on call must contact the reporting agency to collect the required information.
  2. The PHI will contact the clinic, physician or hospital and complete the Rabies Incident Report form (HPDRAB(F)1).
  3. The PHI will follow-up verbally with the Manager on call to advise of the significance of the report and/or advise of the need for consultation with the Medical Officer of Health for contact management and recommended prophylaxis.  The PHI will keep the Manager updated on the case management by phone or Blackberry.
  4. All information collected regarding the report of a biting incident is confidential.  A record will be created and maintained during incident follow-up by the PHI.  Notes form (HPDRAB(F)1) is used for documentation.  The Manager will document the call from the after-hours answering service as per the normal policy. The PHI will forward the incident information to the appropriate PHI for completion of the investigation the next business day.
  5. Incidents where vaccine is issued will be entered into iPHIS by the Program Assistant the first business day following the date the report was received.
