Procedure Number: CA.83.02.116
Effective Date: March 1996

PROCEDURE

  1. Beach samples will be taken in accordance with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Beach Management Protocol 2008. The frequency of samples will be taken weekly in conjunction with the Conservation Authorities.  Schedules to be determined annually.
  2. Samples are to be stored in coolers and maintained at proper temperatures.
  3. Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Bacteriological Analysis of Water forms are required for each individual beach sampling area and sheets are to be addressed to the appropriate area office.
  4. The Provincial Public Health Laboratory will fax/mail the results to the Guelph office where the geometric means will be calculated, entered into a database and forwarded to the Conservation Authority.
  5. Guelph Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) are to forward a copy of the results to the Fergus and Orangeville offices.
  6. A beach will be posted after an adverse result and a risk analysis has been completed.  An adverse result is when the geometric mean is greater than 100 E.coli per 100 ml. of water.
  7. The water Inspector in the appropriate office will contact the appropriate Conservation Authority that the swimming area will be posted.  When posting beaches, place one (1) sign at park entrance and at least two (2) signs at the beach area.
  8. A beach will be re-sampled by either the Conservation Authority or Public Health after an adverse result.
  9. Ensure that maps are available in each office, indicating the designated sampling points for each swimming area.
