POLICY STATEMENT

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) recognizes that supporting student research projects will provide students with valuable experience and increase the capacity of WDGPH to meet the requirements of the Foundational Standard of the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS).

WDGPH will negotiate with students to establish mutually agreed objectives and outcomes.

All applications for support of student research projects at WDGPH are considered on an individual basis based on:

  • Student competencies and relevant experience that demonstrate a capacity to achieve the agreed outcomes;
  • Consistency of the research project with the requirements and outcomes of the Ontario Public Health Standards;
  • Consistency of the research project with the mission, vision, values, strategic directions and identified priorities of WDGPH; and
  • WDGPH resources to adequately support and supervise the student.

Remuneration:

In general there is no remuneration or reimbursement of personal expenses. Costs incurred at the request of WDGPH are fully reimbursable.

PROCEDURE

Before commencement of a student research project:

  • The student and the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) Supervisor will agree on the expectations and responsibilities of both parties;
  • The WDGPH Supervisor and the student will meet with the Manager of Health Analytics and Health Promotion to discuss the research project and resources required; and
  • A description of the research project will be submitted to WDGPH Directors for approval.  It will include:
    • Rationale, purpose and outcomes of the research project;
    • Timelines;
    • Data required;
    • Resources required;
    • WDGPH Supervisor; and
    • Academic advisor and contact information.

The Director, Finance and Corporate Services, the student and the student’s academic advisor will sign a contractual agreement that will include details of proposed arrangements relating to the ownership and/or commercialization of intellectual property created through work of the partnership.
